The Waterworks Company is proud to bring a première event to Montreal- the world’s first full staging of Aftermath, from an unpublished work of Andrea Dworkin, edited for the stage by Adam Thorburn with the permission of Andrea Dworkin’s literary estate.
In 1999, writer and feminist activist Andrea Dworkin was drugged and raped in her Paris hotel room. The following year, she went public about the attack, and was met with disbelief. The refrain, so familiar to rape survivors, erupted from haters and allies alike: had she come unglued? Why did she take so long to come forward? If she didn’t remember it, how could it have really happened? Was it a desperate publicity grab? Through her remaining years, her public profile never recovered from the backlash.
But in the first weeks after the attack, long before she went public, she emptied her heart in an essay that she kept hidden. A dialogue between despair and the will to endure, this essay remained unseen on her computer, unknown to even her closest friends, until after her death six years later.
This essay has become “Aftermath”. In it, Dworkin examines the contours of the blank space the drug left in her memory where the rape should have been, and wonders whether her decades-long personal and public rebellion against the constraints of womanhood amounted to anything. “Aftermath” is not only a testimony of a crime, but a rare portrait of a revolutionary’s private struggle with self-doubt and isolation.
“Aftermath” stars Montreal actor Helena Levitt, and is directed by Waterworks’ founders,Tracey Houston and Rob Langford. Special opening night is Thursday, September 17th at 8pm, with shows on Fridays (8pm), Saturdays (4pm and 8pm) and Sundays (4pm) until September 27th, at the Centre culturel Georges-Vanier, 2450 Workman (Parc Vinet) in Little Burgundy (metro Lionel-Groulx). En 1999, l’écrivain et militante féministe Andrea Dworkin a été droguée et violée dans sa chambre d’hôtel à Paris. L’année suivante, elle a publié un récit à propos de l’attaque dans un journal brittanique. Le récit a été accueilli avec scepticisme. Le vieux refrain, si reconnu parmi les victimes de viol, fût répété, par des alliées de même que ses ennemis: a-t-elle perdu sa raison? Pourquoi avait-t-elle attendu si longtemps avant de se manifester? Si elle n’avait plus de souvenir de l’attaque, comment savoir qu’elle a réellement eu lieu? N’était-ce qu’un coup publicitaire désespéré d’une personnalité public qui a eu son temps? Au cours de ses dernières années, son profil public n’a jamais récupéré.
Pourtant, dans les premières semaines après l’attaque, elle avait déjà vidé son cœur dans une mémoire. Un dialogue entre le désespoir et la volonté de vivre, cet essai , un oeuvre réalisé avec soin, fût délaissé sur son disque dur, à l’insu même de ses plus proches amis, jusqu’après sa mort six ans plus tard.
Cette mémoire est devenu “Aftermath”. Dans ce document, Dworkin examine le contour du vide laissé dans sa mémoire par la drogue, et questionne si sa rébellion personnelle et publique contre les contraintes d’être femme a finalement aboutie à rien. “Aftermath” est non seulement le témoignage d’un crime, mais un portrait de la lutte interne d’une révolutionnaire contre le doute et l’isolement.
